Ensuring stable, fast, and reliable data flow between the signal transmission and reception points is the main task of modern telecommunications. Transmission of data between points that are often hundreds or thousands of kilometers apart is a challenge in which fiber-optics networks play a key role.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The xWDM technology is a so-called wave multiplication technology used to increase transmission capacity of existing fiber-optic networks. It is based on the multiplexing method in which multiple optical signals from different sources, with different power and different wavelengths, called colors, are transformed and transmitted simultaneously within a single optical fiber.<\/p> <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The\u00a0letter\u00a0\"X\"\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0beginning\u00a0of the\u00a0technology's\u00a0name\u00a0is\u00a0nothing\u00a0more\u00a0than\u00a0a\u00a0designation\u00a0for the\u00a0two\u00a0main\u00a0techniques\u00a0involved.\u00a0What\u00a0exactly\u00a0is\u00a0it\u00a0about? It\u00a0is\u00a0CWDM and DWDM.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

CWDM<\/strong> (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) allows to send up to 18 channels with wavelengths from 1271nm to 1611nm. On the other hand.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

DWDM <\/strong>(Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) allows to transmit currently 96 channels. Often there are also solutions for transmission of 16, 40 and 80 channels. Additionally, DWDM technique is characterized by much longer transmission range than CWDM, which reaches up to several thousand kilometres.\u202f\u202f <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These\u00a0techniques\u00a0allow\u00a0to\u00a0increase\u00a0effectiveness of optical\u00a0fibres\u00a0usage. They\u00a0are\u00a0characterised\u00a0by\u00a0compatibiliy with\u00a0all network devices and scalability, thanks\u00a0to\u00a0which\u00a0it\u00a0is possible\u00a0to\u00a0freely\u00a0add subsequent channels. \n\t Single Fiber solution based on Bi-Di (WDM) transceivers <\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

This system is capable of transmitting 2 x 10G signals over single fiber. WDM coupler is a small passive device and can be mounted both in a switch cabinet and taken out e.g. to the cable well, which is a huge advantage when the location is a facility where fibers and space are leased.<\/p> <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t Single fiber xWDM solution <\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

These systems can transmit 4 x 10G signals over single fiber. It is fully customable \u2013 we can use mux\/demux 2ch, 4ch and up to 18ch (for CWDM) and more (for DWDM). The quantity of channels is related to the max distance the transmission can be set due to increasing additional filter attenuation as the number of channels increases.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

As you can see in presented schemes, we can design solution called IP over C\/DWDM. Except standard xWDM solution, where the signals from client devices are connected to the transponders that convert signal to xWDM, we can also propose solutions in which xWDM transceivers are plugged directly into client devices such as switches, routers, etc., thanks to which the solutions can be much more cost-effective.<\/p> <\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t

For DWDM solution we can expand such system due to the possibility of using optical amplifiers, which allows to increase the distance at which the transmission can be set. In addition, to minimize the impact of the number of channels on the transmission range, we can use a R\/B Coupler that connects muxed channels from both subbands.<\/p>

Building such an extensive DWDM system (16 x 10G over single fiber), we can increase the transmission range by using optical amplifiers both in the form of preamps and boosters. You can see an example of such a system architecture.<\/p>

But it\u2019s not over. We can also build an xWDM system that will combine both CWDM and DWDM multiplexing techniques and further increase the transmission capacity of such a system. So, by using a special OCL port of CWDM muxes, we can set additional 2x10G transmissions.<\/p>

Moreover, except that CWDM filters can be use to increase total amount of available channels, these filters can also be use to increase the number of sites, as these filters do not have to be in the same locations as the DWDM filters.<\/p>
