Backup is the best solution in case of data loss

World Backup Day, celebrated on March 31st, reminds us of the importance of regularly creating backups of data. Today’s holiday is a perfect opportunity to emphasize that ensuring the security of critical information is crucial for every organization, and backup is one of the most effective ways to minimize the risk of data loss.

Poland is one of the key targets for cybercriminals.

Since October 2022, the number of cyber attacks in our country has increased from 1,000 to over 2,000 per week. Companies and institutions from the public utility, financial, and manufacturing sectors are being targeted. Cybercriminals target critical infrastructure, the sudden shutdown of which can cause massive disruptions on a large scale.

As experts in KPMG’s “Cybersecurity Barometer 2022” report note, last year, as many as 58% of companies in Poland experienced at least one security breach incident, and 33% of companies reported an increase in attempted cyber attacks. One of the techniques used by hackers that draws attention is ransomware, which was the victim of one-third of KPMG survey respondents in the past.

What role does backup play in securing critical information?

Data backup is the process of creating a backup copy of important information stored on different media such as hard drives, external drives, or the cloud. Backup is used to restore data in case of loss or damage to the primary source. Many individuals and companies do not realize how important it is to regularly create backups until they experience data loss due to system failure, human error, or a hacker attack.

Lack of data backup can have serious consequences. The loss of important business information leads to legal, financial, and reputational problems. Why is it worth creating backup copies? Primarily because data backup effectively secures information and minimizes losses resulting from various system failures.

Creating regular backups allows for a quick system restore to its state prior to failure, minimizing time and financial losses. In addition, data backup allows for safe storage of information on external media, protecting it from theft or destruction.

What should a good backup system have?

A good backup should have several characteristics. First, it should contain secure storage, or a place to store data encrypted with a high-quality encryption algorithm. It is also important that data is encrypted before it is sent, not only after it reaches the server or storage.

Another important characteristic is redundancy, which allows for work despite a server failure. The best solutions are RAID 6 or RAID 10.

Comprehensive protection is also an important element, including file backups, folder backups, end devices, mailboxes, physical servers, databases, and others.

Fast data restoration from backup copies and centralized backup creation process management are additional features of a good backup. This way, you can gain full control over backups in the company, monitor them in real-time, and restore data in case of failure from anywhere in the network.

Global source deduplication, the most efficient and modern approach to creating backups, is also worth considering.

Global source deduplication is the most efficient and modern approach to data backup, optimizing backup storage space by avoiding duplication of the same files located in different network locations. As data continues to grow each year, it’s crucial to optimize backup storage space and avoid duplicating backup files
